māhave

1. (n.) a fish, a flyingfish (Cypselurus oligolepis, Cheilopogon spp.) edible, often caught at night, the difference between a "hahave" and a "ma:have" is that the "hahave" has a blunter snout; "māhave" is preferred as a bait fish for trawling because it is more streamlined and so keeps its shape; "ma:have" have transparent wings and a different shade of colour; young and small flying fish are called "hipa"
